Oilwell Perforators Safety Training

The Oilwell Perforators Safety Training course teaches workers who are engaged in well operations such as wire line perforating and completions, TCP perforating, explosive fracturing, pipe recovery and tool services to learn the basics of oilwell explosives.

This course has been developed in conjunction with the Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC) and Western Canada and the Territories government representatives to provide a minimum industry training standard for blasting in oil and gas wells.

The Alberta Government has issued Energy Safety Canada an authorization letter to provide industry with this training,

Application Process

  • Complete the Oilwell Perforators Safety Training application form.
  • Your application must be approved at least two working days prior to the start of the course.
  • As per Manitoba Regulations, a person must hold a Manitoba issued Seismic Blaster Certificate in order to blast in Manitoba. Therefore, the Interprovincial Seismic Blaster Permit would be accepted as proof of training for the transfer application Individuals should fill out the free transfer application, accompanied by the interprovincial permit, a current passport quality photo and a provincial criminal record check.

Upon Completion

Upon successful completion of this course and Interprovincial examination with a minimum of 85%, Energy Safety Canada issues an Interprovincial Oilwell Blaster’s permit, valid throughout the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Topics Covered

This course teaches workers the skills they require to prevent incidents and to protect themselves, the public, property, and the environment. Workers will learn:

  • Safe storage
  • Transportation
  • Shop handling
  • Wellsite handling of explosives
  • Regulations

Prerequisites

Individuals seeking an interprovincial Oilwell Blasters permit must:

  • Be at least eighteen years of age
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and written
  • Have a minimum of six months hands-on experience in preparing and firing oilwell explosive charges in the field in the past 36 months or have equivalent experience acceptable to the Oilwell Perforators Safety Training and Advisory Committee (shop gun assembly experience on its own is not sufficient to acquire a blasters permit).
  • Be physically capable of performing the duties of an Oilwell Blaster.
  • Have government issued photo identification (i.e., driver’s license, passport, etc.) and Explosive Regulatory Division approval letter (or equivalent) to write the interprovincial examination.

Notes

  • Slick liners are welcome to take this course, however the course deals primarily with electric line perforating
  • You may take this course for general informational purposes and there are no prerequisites or examinations. You will not be eligible for an interprovincial certificate, but you will receive a Record of Attendance letter upon completion.
  • Registrations at all locations are booked through Energy Safety Canada
  • Students must be on time and present for all course content instruction. Students who miss any course content cannot be certified and registration fees will not be reimbursed, as per the Cancellation Policy
  • Course duration may continue beyond 4:30 pm

  • A government-issued, picture ID
  • Printer to print the certificate after successfully completing the course
